(San Antonio, Texas)—Susan Pamerleau, candidate for Bexar County Sheriff, today charged incumbent Sheriff Amadeo Ortiz with “gross mismanagement and misconduct.”
“The regime of Sheriff Amadeo Ortiz is rampant with a disturbing pattern of gross mismanagement and misconduct,” Pamerleau said at her campaign headquarters, adding, “what makes his conduct so troubling is the sheer breadth and depth of the mismanagement—all you have to do is listen to the news, go online or read the newspaper—it’s an embarrassment to the citizens of Bexar County.”
Pamerleau, who served in the United States Air Force for more than 30 years and retired as a two-star general, was also a Senior Vice President at USAA. Pamerleau’s experience covers both the public and private sectors with a focus on efficiency and building high-performing teams. In her career, Pamerleau has led staffs and managed budgets much larger than that of the Sheriff’s Office and Jail.
To support her charges against the incumbent Sheriff, Pamerleau presented a lengthy list of news articles and reports regarding the actions of the Sheriff and the activities in his office and at the Bexar County Jail, including mismanagement of the Sheriff Office’s $100 million budget, requesting more money to guard fewer prisoners even though the Bexar County Jail is not at capacity, a detention officer being arrested for cocaine possession, a detention officer impersonating a criminal investigator, mismanagement of money and property at the jail, inmates being mistakenly released from the jail, claims of sexual abuse, allowing the smuggling of drugs and hacksaw tools into the jail, charges of female inmates being assaulted, drug dealing by jail guards, and several others. (A list of links to these news stories is included at the end of his release.)
“The bottom line is this,” Pamerleau said, “in any organization, management policy, tone and style are set by the person in charge. By any measure, Sheriff Ortiz has failed at his job and the result is the safety of the citizens of Bexar County is unnecessarily at risk. I will put an end to this mismanagement so we can better protect our citizens. That is what the Sheriff is elected to do, and that is exactly what I will do.”
